Brain Injury Community Connection
In June 2011 Real Community services Acquired Brain Injury Support Service changed its name to Brain Injury Community Connection (BICC). This re-branding highlights the very specific role that BICC performs in reconnecting those affected by a brain injury with their communities.
Key to BICC’s success has been the specific recruitment of suitable support staff who are chosen to work with clients to achieve their rehabilitation and community reintegration goals
BICC’s mission is to help individuals rebuild their lives post injury
Brain Injury can happen to anyone. As many as 11,000 Queenslanders can be expected to sustain a brain injury each year.
Brain injuries are often known as the “invisible disability” as even mild injuries can impact on all aspects of a person’s life and yet there is little physical evidence to be seen. Many areas of an individual’s life will be impacted after a brain injury, including cognitive ability, memory, concentration, planning, problem solving and personality changes which result in relationship disruption, complex behaviours and isolation from the community.
BICC provides assistance to adults and children with an acquired brain injury (ABI). Our research has shown a lack of specialised support services available for people who require assistance with the challenges of rebuilding their lives post injury. Our research has shown a lack of specialised support services available for people who require assistance with the challenges of rebuilding their lives post injury.
BICC collaborates with case managers, allied health professionals and families to provide targeted coordination and support staff to implement rehabilitation, life skills and reintegration programs.
We support clients throughout the Greater Brisbane area and outside this via individual negotiation.
Our service understands the challenges specific to individuals with an ABI. Our consistent, client centred approach :
- Creates individualised support plans that identify achievable goals
- Promotes rehabilitation, community integration and the highest level of independence achievable.
- Ensures appropriate staff are sourced to build therapeutic relationships
